More urologists required for Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- Medical students and practitioners are being encouraged to answer the call to specialise in urology as the ratio presently is 1:300,000 Malaysians.

Deputy Health Minister, Dr Lee Boon Chye, said after launching the 27th Malaysian Urological Conference today, that the government would like to increase the number of urologist nationwide to 1,000 as there are merely 114 doctors in the field currently.

In order to achieve this goal, the Malaysian Board of Urology has launched the New Comprehensive Urological Curriculum for urological trainees, Dr Lee added.

He said there is also a need to create awareness among middle-aged and elderly men not to delay seeking treatment for a urological complaint.

"Men should come forward if they have a urinary tract problem because it could be related to the kidneys or cancer," he said.

The conference, which ends Nov 24 and themed “Shades of Grey in Urology”, has the participation of 300 medical practitioners and students.
