KUALA TERENGGANU, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- A pair of twins, born through the in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) technique, bringing joy to their parents who waited eight years to have children, created history at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) here.
The twins were the 100th and 101st babies at the hospital born through the IVF technique conducted by the hospital’s Reproductive Treatment Unit since 2009.
State Health Director Dr Mohd Jusoh said the baby girl weighing 2.56 kilogram (kg), was born on Sunday as the 101th baby, while her brother, weighing 2.6 kg, was the 101st.
“Since the unit started in 2009, 700 couples underwent IVF treatment with 727 embryo transfers carried out, and to date, 101 babies have been born,” he told reporters after a celebration was held to welcome the babies here today.
Of the 101 babies born through IVF, 52 were boys and 49 girls.
There are only four government hospitals in Malaysia which offer IVF treatment, namely the HSNZ for the east coast zone, Kuala Lumpur Hospital (central zone), Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (northern zone) and the Sabah Women’s and Children Hospital (Sabah and Sarawak).
Dr Mohd added that couples who do not have children could try getting treatment at HSNZ for as little as RM3,500 to RM4,000.
