KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 (Bernama) -- A member of parliament suggested that the government take a page out of Singapore's approach on vaccination.
Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen (PH-Bandar Kuching) said in the neighbouring country, legal action is taken against parents who do not vaccinate their children.
"Families who want to apply for a pass to go on a long-term visit to Singapore must also show proof their children have been vaccinated. This is to safeguard the welfare of children and the community as a whole,” he said.
He said this when debating the motion of thanks for the royal address in the Dewan Rakyat sitting here today.
Hence, he advised the government to amend existing laws and introduce mandatory laws to make vaccination compulsory.
He also emphasised the importance of explaining to the community on the need for vaccines which not only can save the lives of their children but also others and to prevent contagious diseases such as diphtheria and measles that can cause death.
The Dewan Rakyat sitting resumes tomorrow.
