KKM recalls traditional product containing excessive heavy metals

KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 (Bernama) -- The National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) of the Ministry of Health (KKM) has ordered several batches of Kin Foong San (Medicinal Powder) 4gm traditional product to be recalled from the market.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the recall was made after analysis of the product samples showed them to contain mercury and cadmium heavy metals above permitted levels.

“Following that, the company voluntarily decided to recall all the different batches of the registered product from the market for further tests. The product is traditionally used for infants and children to help relieve them from fever, cough, toothache and abdominal pain.

“The batch numbers of the tainted products are VG05035, VG05036, VG05037, VG05038, VG05039, VG05040 and VG05041,” he said in a statement today.

Dr Noor Hisham said products contaminated with excessive quantities of mercury could cause kidney damage, nervous system disorder and impaired cognitive thinking, while products contaminated with high levels of cadmium were harmful to kidneys and bones.

“As such, consumers are advised to immediately stop using the Kin Foong San (Medicinal Powder) 4gm of the relevant batch numbers and seek advice from health professionals if they have any discomfort or suffer from adverse effects,” he said.

Consumers are also advised to return the affected products to the sellers and contact the company at telephone number 03-6192 1888 or email vitagreen@gmail.com for inquiries.

The public is encouraged to check the registration status of a particular product through the official NPRA website www.npra.gov.my or via the NPRA Product Status application, which can be downloaded from Google Play Store.
