Number of dengue cases in Penang dropped last week

GEORGE TOWN, June 11 (Bernama) -- Dengue fever cases in Penang recorded a drop of 1.52 per cent or one case in the seven-day period last week, compared to the previous week.

The state Health Department's Public Health Division in a statement said 65 dengue cases were reported from June 2 until 8, compared to 66 cases from May 26 to June 1.

According to the statement, despite a drop in cases, cumulatively, until June 8, a total of 2,808 dengue cases were reported compared to 1,847 cases for the same period last year, namely, an increase of 961 cases or 52.03 per cent.

“Eight deaths from dengue fever were reported until the 22nd week of 2019 compared to two deaths in the same period in 2018.  This shows an increase of 300 per cent or six deaths,” the statement said.

There were 10 controlled outbreak locations reported in the state, namely three at North East, six at Central Seberang Perai and one at  South Seberang Perai.

The Health Department also urged the public to carry out gotong-royong in their respective housing areas to eradicate breeding areas.
