UMS teams up with Swiss German University for research on TB

KOTA KINABALU, July 10 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in collaboration with the Swiss German University (SGU) in Indonesia is conducting a research to reduce the transmission of the tuberculosis (TB) disease, especially in the state.

UMS Biotechnology Research Institute director Dr Zarina Amin said UMS and SGU had obtained a two-year grant to undertake the research which began six months ago at the UMS experimental laboratory.

She said a grant of RM200,000 was from the "UMS Matching Grant" and another RM200,000 was from "External Collaboration Grant" of SGU.

"The purpose of the research is to find effective methods to reduce the number of TB infections in the state as the number of TB patients in Sabah is constantly increasing," she told reporters at the 6th Biotechnology Symposium organised by UMS here today.

The two-day symposium, themed "Biotechnology in Sustainable Development Goals", was launched by Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Deputy Minister Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis.
