Dengue cases in Penang drop 85.38 per cent

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 15 -- Dengue fever cases in Penang record a drop of 432 cases or 85.38 per cent to 74 cases for the period between Jan 1 until Jan 11, compared to 506 cases in the same period last year.

The Penang Health Department’s (JKNPP) public health division, in a statement today, said that during the period, only one death due to dengue was recorded compared to two during the same period last year. 

‘’For the second week of this year, namely, Jan 5 to Jan 11, 31 dengue cases were reported compared to 43 cases in the first week (Dec 29 to Jan 4), namely, a drop of 12 cases or 27.91 per cent,’’ according to the statement.

The statement said that seven locations of controlled incidents of dengue were reported, namely, Kampung Mutiara, Midland Condominium, Greenlane Height Block G, Flat Kampung Melayu, Quayside Condo and Taman Kristal Apartment in the Timur Laut district and Taman Seri Puteri in the Barat Daya district.

In addition, there were three hot spots, namely, Vista Condo and Jalan Chee Seng 1-10 in the Timur Laut district and Perkampungan Valdor B in the Seberang Perai Selatan district.

According to the statement, the public were advised to quickly seek treatment at clinics or hospitals when they had fever and dengue symptoms such as aching body or joints, experience vomiting, rashes on the skin and lacking appetite.

‘’JKNPP reminds the communities to take immediate steps to stop the proliferation of dengue by inspecting houses and compounds to identify and eradicate aedes mosquito breeding places every week,’’ said the statement.
